The
Snowflakes Sail Gently Down
This poem is about the first experience of snow by a
Nigerian poet in a foreign land.
He compares the coldness of the western country to
the warmth that he receives in Africa. He prefers warmth to coldness.
The picture that he imagines in the foreign land is
of death and coldness, whereas when he sleeps and dreams about his country all
he sees is warmth, birth and growth. He tries to compare the strong root of the
palms to that of the strong roots of the Nigerian’s culture which remain
unaffected by the western culture brought by colonizers.
When awoke he regrets to be in a land which is
filled with mystery.
